Deden Supriyatman is the country's most respected thinker and motivator in corrosion controls. His thinking has inspired many business leaders and practitioners in Indonesia, as well as in the non-profit sectors such as in the industrial and professional organizations.

Graduated as a Chemical Engineer from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia in 1983 and a degree holder of Master in Business Administration from John Luther Management Institute, USA, he started his career in March 1983 as a Metallurgy Engineer of National Atomic Agency in Bandung then became a Production Laboratory Engineer on December 1984 of TOTAL E&P INDONESIE in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan managing 6 operating fields i.e. Tunu, Peciko, Sisi-Nubi, Handil, Bekapai, South Mahakam, a 2000 km away from Jakarta. That time he assumed a position as the Head Service of Process Treatment and Corrosion.

In his present employer with TOTAL E&P INDONESIE, he is in the front-end of Corporate Business Negotiation and Approvals Seeker from Indonesian Government c/q Executive Body of Upstream Oil & Gas Business (BPMIGAS) on Plan of Developments (POD), Work Plan & Budget (WP&B) and Authorization for Expenditures (AFE) for any maintenance of existing facilities, newly operated project developments and including drilling of TOTAL E&P INDONESIE, amounting an annual budget of USD. 2 Billion.

Defining himself as a planning and strategic specialist with international reputation and vast experiences in corrosion controls for over two decades in the field operations of upstream oil and gas in particular and general industries in broadest disciplines, he has promoted intensively the awareness of corrosion's adverse effects through various seminars, conferences, and workshops which were done both in-house and overseas.

He has written more than 20 scientific, technical and case studies related to chemical treatment, corrosion, flow assurances and technological risks. Among other titles, he was the author of “Corrosion Mitigation in Indonesian Oil & Gas Industry” which was presented in Asia Pacific Corrosion Control Conference, Osaka Japan. He was also a co-author of  “SCC: AISI 420, 4240, and 1045 on Alloy Steel Used in the Oil, Gas and Geothermal Industry at Elevated Temperatures in a H2S Environment" presented for SPE International Symposium on Oil Field Chemistry, Houston, Texas in 1999 as a joint paper work with Dr. Rudi R. Rubiandini (ITB).

One of his numerous researches entitled "Top of Line Corrosion of Pipelines in Tunu Giant Gas Field" which he wrote hand-in-hand with Dr. Y.M. Gunaltun and A. Jamaludin, and presented in the globe's prestigious corrosion conference of NACE International in 1999 at San Antonio - USA, has ever been published by the world's most widely read petroleum industry publication.

In the scholastic life, he was a guest lecturer at College of Engineering of United Arab Emirate (UAE) University Abu Dhabi, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), University of Indonesia, University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, University of Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Yogyakarta, and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya. For these academic contributions, he has been awarded as TOTAL Professeurs Associes where his responsibilities are to develop "Teachers and Courses Database" and recruit the "Best of The Best Candidates" to join TOTAL E&P INDONESIE.

While in the non-profit organizations, he is a board to the Society of Petroleum Engineer (SPE) Java Section, Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA), Indonesian Association of Petroleum Engineers (IATMI), the trustee of NACE International Indonesia section, the chairman to SSPC Indonesian chapter and an advisor of Indonesian Coating Association (ASCOATINDO) as well as the chairman for Corrosion Forum of KMI (Indonesian Oil & Gas Community).

He has successfully chaired Maintenance & Production Reliability Conference (MAPREC 2005), Indonesian Pipelines (INDOPIPE 2006) International Conference & Exhibition, and Indonesia Coating International (INDOCOATING 2007) Conference & Exhibitions. He has been also the chairman of corrosion technical session in the Applied Technology Workshop (ATW) organized by SPE in Kyoto, Japan, last 12-14 October 2007. His book on "Learning by Proximity: A Scientific and Practitioner Journeys" is currently being finalized and will soon be published.

Presently, he is chairing the Organizing Committee of Indocoating & Corrosion Summit 2008 International Conference & Exhibition that will be held in Jakarta Convention Center on this coming 12-14 August 2008. Moreover, he has been appointed as a Steering Committee member of 1). Indonesia Pipelines (INDOPIPE 2008) International Conference & Exhibition that will be held in Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta on 10-12 June 2008, and 2). Indonesia Coal Bed Methane (IndoCBM) International Conference & Exhibition at Gran Melia Hotel Jakarta on this coming  25-26 June 2008.

Dr. Lou Vincent, the President of NACE International 2007-2008 and one of the most famous authors in the world for many corrosion and protective coating books, in one of his letters even testified that NACE International is so fortunate to have such strong supporters in Indonesia as Deden Supriyatman along with all the officers of the newly formed Jakarta NACE Section. The last few months have seen not only the formation of the Jakarta Section, but also the convening of the NACE CIP 1 Coating Inspection Course and additionally a dinner talk on corrosion was held in April 2008 with International NACE Instructors, Rob Freedman from Australia and Warren Graves from Canada, meeting with numerous industry leaders from Indonesia. He further commented that NACE Officers and Staff look forward to assisting their loyal Indonesian members with training courses and selection activities throughout Indonesia in the coming year.

Beside that, for all his tremendous and extraordinary efforts in corrosion controls, he has won an enormous number of awards. He was the recipient of International Who’s Who 1997 (nominated in USA) as a testament to his professionalism, academic and civic achievements. Received “J.L. Bourguois Award” from TOTAL Head Office France (1999) for scientifically disclosing a unique phenomenon “Top of Line Corrosion” of Tunu giant gas field pipelines, and also a recipient of “Coating Awareness Award” from Indonesian Coating Association. Thus, Deden's wisdom and expertise has reached well beyond the confines of the country and he is an ultimate thinker and motivator of corrosion controls.
